I haven't been able to obtain any comment from OpenLDAP developers
on the behaviour of LDAP_OPT_DEBUG_LEVEL, other than some quick hand
waving and a stern statement that they don't see it as a bug. The
OpenLDAP lists are usually helpful, so either my questions were too
stupid to deserve an answer, or it takes more communication skills than
I currently have to trigger their helpful mode. You can see my attempt

In the mean time, the patch below seems to work with all decently
recent versions of OpenLDAP, and shouldn't have any adverse effects on
non-OpenLDAP client libraries. Over and out.
