Authenticator failed for external connected thru mail client software (not webmail).

This failed with the error message:
2004-11-06 15:33:25 sasl_cram_md5 authenticator failed for
([192.168.9.1]) [192.168.9.1]: 535 Incorrect authentication data

[192.168.9.1]: 535 Incorrect authentication data

192.168.9.1 is configured as not a relay host of the mail server.

The cyrus(2.2)-imap (with sasl2.2) configuration is as follow:

Authenticator of Exim is configured as follow:
.....
sasl_cram_md5:
        driver = cyrus_sasl
        public_name = CRAM-MD5
        server_set_id = $1

sasl_plain:
        driver = cyrus_sasl
        public_name = PLAIN
        server_set_id = $1

Exim is compiled with cyrus-sasl2.2 support.

I've been working on this issue for more than a month.
Any suggestion is highly appreciated.
